The Civically Engaged Readers Club is a two-month course for students who are interested in furthering their critical thinking, or students who are engaged in civic service and wish to deepen their understanding of it. Students will engage in group discussions of the stories in the Civically Engaged Reader, as well as written assignments and homeworks that probe the ideas behind service to one's community.

This program is ideal for highschool students currently performing their obligatory community service requirements and students who are interested in examining the values that prompt civic service. The stories in The Civically Engaged Reader are from celebrated authors in philosophy, fiction, and non-fiction all over the world. They prompt think and responses as to the nature of our commitments to society, the power of service to make a difference, and the role of the responsible citizen in today's world.

PROMISE also recommends this class as a good "prerequisite" for its SAT prepatory program. This course does not consist of "teaching to the test", but strong critical thinking skills are essential for success on the SAT. This class is not required, but it will help to further prepare students for placing into the college of their choice.
